Tracerco’s Model 401 is a modern radiation contamination monitor designed to detect radiation on objects and surfaces. It employs a GM pancake detector that is sensitive to alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. The detector can be used with it clipped onto the meter or removed to facilitate two-handed operation to better accommodate hard to reach areas.
The digital LCD presents a nice analog meter accompanied by large size numeric characters that facilitate knowing how high on the scale the reading is as well as the specific value. Two key features of this instrument are its ability to preprogram 14 nuclide efficiencies to allow direct readout of the contamination and to operate the instrument in peak mode where the highest value is retained.
The controls are intuitive and require little if any training to understand. Controls are provided that enable:
– Powering the instrument on and off
– Activating the speaker
– Turning on the LCD backlight
– Resetting the meter to zero
– Switching between rate and peak rate modes
The unit is operated by a single 9V battery that delivers approximately 100 hours of operation. The housing is constructed from rugged plastic that is weatherproof for outdoor use and incorporates a hook in the handle to attach to either a lanyard or other means of conveyance.
